ABANDONMENT OF THE NIS PROJECT (NIS : Nacelle Integrated Solutions)
FO DECLARATION AT THE CSE OF AIRBUS AIRCRAFT

After nearly three years of research and development and while several million euros have been invested in facilities and demonstrators, the management of AIRBUS Group has just announced the abandonment of the industrialization and marketing project for engine nacelles internally.

This staggering and unexpected decision calls into question a strategic decision which aims to weigh on a market held until today by a single supplier.

This monopoly situation weighs on the final cost of our aircraft and in fact destroys any prospect of improving the performance of this key subset.

The progress of the work already undertaken by AIRBUS has made it possible to obtain serious improvements in the product and to work on the commonality of the nacelles of the Pratt & Whitney and CFM engines.

Beyond these technological advances, real cost savings of around 20% have already been consolidated compared to the nacelles in service.

In addition, the supply of nacelles to companies suggests an extremely interesting market in terms of maintenance and services.

By abandoning this project and turning away from this strategy AIRBUS makes the deliberate choice to turn its back on an obvious competitive advantage over its competitors.

This turnaround is all the more incomprehensible since our company is facing an unprecedented crisis which is having a very strong impact on our workload. It therefore deliberately adds to the drop in economic activity that we have been facing for three months, with the immediate destruction of about 350 jobs, not to mention the outlook for future production costs.

Pretexting at this stage of the non-consolidation of the NIS project in sales contracts with companies is not admissible. Firstly, because it was obviously too early to guarantee this success, but above all because it was clear that major companies were interested and about to commit.

FO therefore clearly asks the question: What is the real reason for this reversal of strategy?

As for the form of this announcement and while ethics and compliance have been instituted as the Alpha and Omega of AIRBUS practices, we are entitled to be surprised at the lightness with which our leaders sit on the rules of social law that govern, within our companies, information and consultation on strategic developments that impact their investments, their workloads and ultimately their jobs.

Finally, while AIRBUS’s industrial strategy has still been under construction since the arrival of a new executive committee, this decision will have a profound impact on the competitiveness of the sites affected by this brutal shutdown. In fact, the investments made will never be amortized by the proceeds from the sale of nacelles, and the hourly rate of these sites will artificially go up, ultimately effectively annihilating the continuous productivity efforts made.

The specialization in propulsion systems represented a guarantee, particularly for the establishments in Nantes and Saint-Eloi and this strategy offered real opportunities for our design offices.

This is why our FO organization requires urgently obtaining guarantees regarding the future of these sites and our jobs.
